I sold my wooden table and gave away my silks,
to go away and marry a man who played lap steel guitar.
He wooed me with gentle caresses,
and whispered the loveliest words.
His eyes were loving and teary,
and his lips were the kissing kind.
I’d never thought I would marry
or move to a foreign land,
but something took me to go with him,
and we thought that love was enough.
CHORUS
I spent many months organising,
preparing for life as a migrant.
I made many visits and conversations,
farewells to family and friends.
Some, they asked me about the wedding dress,
and the close ones, they wondered why is he the one?
They thought my going exciting but far,
a long way to visit for a cup of tea.
CHORUS
With my winter coat and my treasures in hand,
I cried with my brothers good-bye.
I flew to America weary and sleepy,
and landed in the arms of my man.
